Nutritional Yeast

 
Nutritional Yeast is a deactivated yeast. This means the yeast cells are killed during processing, making the final product inactive (non-producing and non-budding). It’s an excellent source of many vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B-12 and zinc. It also offers a number of potential health benefits. Nutritional yeast is low in calories and  packed with fibre.
It’s described as having a nutty, cheesy and savoury flavour. Nutritional Yeast is a common vegan cheese substitute.

How to use:
It can be used to add extra protein, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to meals.

Cautions & contraindications:
While Nutritional Yeast is a valuable addition to most diets, there may be some side effects associated with using it as a dietary supplement. Introducing extra fibre into your diet too quickly can lead to abdominal discomfort such as cramps or even diarrhoea. Also, it may trigger migraine attacks in some individuals and facial flushing. Some individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as Crohn’s disease, may be intolerant of nutritional yeast.
